Sochi Arboretum is one of the largest and most famous arboretums in the world.
The foundation date of the Park is considered to be 1892, it was by that time that the main work on planting the garden of Sochi arboretum was completed.
The Park is graced with numerous terraces, alleys, and fountains.
In 1899, in the Park, they built a summer cottage (dacha) which was named Nadezhda (Hope) after the wife of nobleman Khudekov. The dacha and the adjacent stairs and alleys make up the compositional center of the Park. Over time, the arbors, sculptures, fountains, vases for flowers, made to Khudekov’s order by the Franco-Italian cast iron company, appeared in the Park.
The Park covers the area of 49 hectares, there are more than 1,700 species of plants from many corners of the Earth, 76 species of pines, 80 species of oaks, 24 species of palms, a collection of bamboos, and cypresses there.
In the Park you can see bread, soap, candy, strawberry and iron trees. Peacocks strut along the alleys of the amazing Park, and ostriches can be seen in the enclosures. At the lower part of the Park there is a pond with swans, pelicans and ducks.
The arboretum is an experimental base of the research Institute of mountain forestry and forest ecology of Russia.
